Perhaps the song that started the whole Rap Hip Hop revolution, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s The Message was actually a bigger hit in the UK (reaching number 8) than in his native USA, where it only reached number 62!
While most of the other genres of the 80s and 90s ran out of steam within a few years, Rap and Hip Hop have gone from strength to strength.
That is the legacy of this song.
